The squid allocation to the Eastern Cape small-scale fishing cooperatives is a touchy subject. On the one hand the commercial squid fishing sector is concerned about the 25% allocation to the small-scale sector and has put forward an appeal. On the other the cooperatives have already received a Letter of Right. They believe they are being unfairly treated and they want their permits. They don’t see why they have to wait another year to be able to fish while the appeal process is resolved.
