Push to Phase Out Demersal Long Line Shark Fishery

A disturbing sight of about 100 sharks beheaded, finned and gutted. They were dumped on a beach along the False Bay coast in April 2020.

Shark conservationists and ecotourism operators are piling on the pressure to have the demersal long line shark fishery phased out. A petition has been raised and numerous complaints have been lodged with the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries.

The presence of the White Rose long liner in Algoa Bay this week has outraged conservationists. They say the vessel should not be fishing while a court case for alleged illegal fishing is pending.

The matter was due to be dealt with in court this week.
