The MFV El Shaddai was fishing for Patagonian Toothfish until it was reported to be in a closed area. It has been a long battle to have it removed from several IUU Vessel Lists. Photo supplied.

Justice does prevail. The KwaZulu Natal Local Division, Durban High Court has delivered a judgement that benefits one ecstatic lady business owner in Durban as well as her family members and her employees. Liz Sher, CEO of Braxton Security Services t/a Braxton Shipping now knows that she was right to insist that her vessel, the South African-flagged longliner, MFV El Shaddai, (IMO 8025082) has done no wrong.

It has been a long seven-year battle with the delegated authority, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) regarding the correct allocation of quota, and a three-year battle to have the MFV El Shaddai removed from the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) IUU fishing vessel list.

Finally in September, the DFFE formally requested CCAMLR to release the MFV El Shaddai from its IUU fishing list. It has also confirmed that it has no reason to prosecute the vessel owner, Braxton Security Services CC t/a Braxton Shipping.
