Western Sahara’s battle for independence from the Kingdom of Morocco appears to have reached a stalemate. The European Court of Justice says the people of the disputed territory should “benefit from the natural resources of the waters”. Morocco, which produces half of all canned sardines worldwide and exports about 90% of it, condemns the ruling. South Africa supports Western Sahara’s call to be “separate and distinct” from Morocco, but it imports frozen fish from Morocco. New marine fishing regulations and the AfCFTA agreement could very well be gamechangers.
