The news of the fire onboard Sea Harvest’s MFV Armana and the rescue of all 20 crew members once again raises the question of prioritising safety ahead of profit. While this incident has also prompted the Minister of Transport, Ms Barbara Creecy, to instruct the Board Chairperson of South African Maritime Authority (SAMSA) to conduct urgent safety inspections of all commercial fishing vessels operating in South African waters, the Sea Harvest Group’s main shareholder, Brimstone has been paying down debt from the proceeds of its core investments.
