Prestigious Appointment for Mammal Research Scientist

Southern right whales are easily distinguished from the other 2 baleen whales (humpback and Bryde’s whales ) by three distinct characteristics: a V-shaped blow, callosities on their heads; and the lack of a dorsal fin on their broad backs.

Dr Els Vermeulen, Research Manager of the Mammal Research Institute (MRI)’s Whale Unit, was recently appointed to the South African National Committee of the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research (SCAR).

This prestigious appointment recognises Dr Vermeulen’s significant contributions to marine mammal research and her commitment to advancing scientific understanding in Antarctic and Southern Ocean science.
