The Sutherland Astronomical Observatory in the Northern Cape is a facility of the National Research Foundation. This is also where you will find the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT).

Even though there is now technology to help mariners and fishermen, they still have an interest in the sun, moon, and the stars. Recently the International Astronomical Union (IAU) hosted its General Assembly conference in Cape Town for the first time delivering a rich scientific programme to more than 2000 in-person participants and 600 attending online.
