South Africa's Marine Protected Areas. The target is to increase the country's protected estate by 0.5% per annum and achieve about 28% of land and sea under protection by 2036.
The new Minister for Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, and his two Deputies, have delivered their Budget Vote speeches (Vote 32) to Parliament. As expected, the fisheries sector can probably not expect to hear too much from the Minister directly as it appears this role will be the jurisdiction of Deputy Minister Narend Singh, while Deputy Minister Bernice Swarts takes on a mix of both the forestry sector and the environment.
