Birdlife SA has become impatient that the imminent demise of the African Penguin population is not being treated seriously enough. At the heart of the problem is that recommendations made by an international Panel of Experts appointed by the (now former) Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, two years ago were accepted, but have not been implemented. This relates to closures to the commercial purse-seine sardine and anchovy fisheries around the breeding colonies on six islands.
