Comment on the Coastal Management Plans for KwaZulu Natal

St Lucia Estuary where the sand barrier separating the Lake St Lucia Estuary from the sea was artificially breached. It had been recommended that natural processes should be allowed to re-establish; the uMfolozi River should be allowed to re-join the Lake St Lucia Estuary, and allowed to fulfil its dual role as a source of fresh water and a driver of mouth inlet dynamics.

The KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (KZN EDTEA) recently gazetted two draft management plans. They are the Coastal Management Programme (CMP) and the Estuarine Management Plan (EMP). Both are in the public domain for comment and the deadline is looming.
