The South African public can be forgiven for thinking that nothing is happening to rectify water supply problems countrywide. We have seen images of the invasive spread of water hyancinth at the Hartebeespoort Dam. But it is a shock to see the very same thing in the Vaal River System which is the source of water for about 20 million people. Although there have been some steady developments since the current Minister took office, there is a lot to fix amidst a so-called ‘water mafia’ operation that threatens infrastructure upgrades. This is a summary of what has been happening in this sector since the Water Summit in January.
