Red flags have been raised over corporate governance issues in the Namibian fishing industry. So much so that this led to a warning from the Minister of Fisheries, Derek Klazen, a few days ago that the government should not be expected to resolve right holding company’s problems.
South Africa’s Oceana Fishing Group has been accused of just wanting access to fishing rights and quota allocations from the Namibian government, but is not prepared to give autonomy to the operations of the local business, in this case Erongo Marine Enterprises (EME).
This, and a whole lot more, has surfaced since EME Managing Director, Martha Uumati, was suspended in February after she refused to attend a meeting in Cape Town ahead of a meeting with the Namibian Competition Commission authority.
