As experienced on the south east coastline, Noctiluca scintillans is a planktonic dinoflagellate that can cause bioluminescence at night and taint surface water a reddish-orange colour.
This year’s red tide, an annual occurrence, has once again delivered large numbers of dead marine animals washing up on beaches along the West Coast of South Africa. The algal bloom has also been extensive along the South East coastline of the country.
