Satellite companies providing crucial GPS communications to European fishing companies are to blame for unsustainable industrial-scale tuna fishing in the Indian Ocean. An open letter signed by marine conservation and animal welfare groups, scientists, academics, parliamentarians, representatives from the
space, technology, and cultural sectors, as well as concerned individuals, has been delivered to the UK branch of Iridium Satellite UK Limited. It calls for the phasing out of the provision of GPS satellite services to companies using drifting fish aggregating devices.
