Ship-to-Ship bunkering is not a popular conversation especially in Algoa Bay. Suppliers are currently feeling the pain of a ban on operations and environmental groups are calling for the practice to stop altogether. After many delays a draft Environmental Risk Assessment and Management Plan for Ship-to-Ship (STS) bunkering in Algoa Bay has now finally been published and is available for stakeholder comment. The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) is alarmed that this ‘retrospective assessment’ should have formed part of due diligence by the permitting authorities and is encouraging readers to participate.
