The Bayworld Oceanarium is in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape. The facility was first built in the 1960s and is now undergoing an infrastructure upgrade. It is one of many projects which the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality wants the private sector to contribute to. It is following the money.

Of course, tourists want to visit a city such as Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) which can offer them something to do to keep them busy. For many, many years a trip to the beach meant a combination of Happy Valley, the annual carnival, or whiling away time on Humewood Beach. The next best thing was watching the dolphins at the Bayworld Oceanarium. It was only much later that the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment Complex was built.

The windy city of Gqeberha is in Algoa Bay and fairly recently it became as a heritage whale watching site. There is also appreciation for the fact that it is the dolphin capital of the world. In addition, numerous international sporting events bring thousands of visitors to the city every year.

It is clear something had to be done about the state of some of the facilities.
