All eyes are on the 28th UN Climate Change Conference – or COP28 as it is known – currently underway in Dubai, United Arab Emirates until 12 December 2023. It provides a platform for a plethora of issues, many of which will be contentious. Countries have different priorities and interests and will battle to find consensus on key issues. South African delegations are also there to participate and / or observe the proceedings.
For developing countries climate resilience is a central theme, but it comes at a cost. The hot topics of phasing out fossil fuels and how to finance energy transition in developing countries are currently contrary to what is really happening on the ground. These are some of the key topics and outcomes to date… and what this means for South Africa.
