
When South Africa lost its International Maritime Organization (IMO) Category C Council seat two years ago, it was a shock to the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) and the Department of Transport. Since then there has been a lot of work behind the scenes to regain the seat, but sadly it was not to be.
Yesterday, 1 December, the new round of elections for the 2024-2025 biennium took place in London. The outcome was not as was hoped, although there was some solace when Morocco, Kenya and Egypt were re-elected to the Council.
