Subsistence fishermen make use of traditional stone fish kraals in the pools directly below the Vanderkloof dam wall. the use of these kraals has been one of several contentious issues raised in meetings between dam stakeholders involved in a new experimental fishery for the area.
Inland fishers want to know when the National Freshwater (Inland) Wild Capture Fisheries Policy will be implemented. Mindful that this is a slow and complicated process, all they want is to be recognised as bona fide fishers doing a meaningful days work. Recently a new report, and a documentary, about South Africa’s inland small-scale fishers, were released.
