Lighthouses still have a role to play as a backup to the electronic equipment that guides ships and fishing vessels, especially when visibility is poor. Technology can and does sometimes fail; computers can and do crash, and solar activity is known to have an effect on accuracy. Global positioning systems can also be purposefully manipulated during times of war.
