In August 2022, there was delight when the Makhanda High Court ruled out exploration for oil and gas off the Transkei and Algoa coastlines. Since then, coastal indigenous communities have had an uphill fight to prevent their lives from being endangered and disregarded.

The Eastern Cape (Makhanda) High Court has set aside exploration right 12/3/252 and all reviews for the exploration of oil and gas in the Transkei and Algoa exploration areas. The news has been widely welcomed. This means there will be no seismic surveying of the Southeast coast of South Africa for now.
