There are still loud calls that there should be no marine phosphate mining in Namibia. The Confederation of Namibian Fishing Associations says it is waiting for scientific and experimental data to confirm conditions of co-existence. The country’s Chamber of Mines and Namibian Chamber of Environment say that seabed mining in Namibia’s national waters is already an established and regulated industry. The latter claims to have had preferential access to independent specialist studies which the fishing industry objects to.
