Mozambique Prioritises the Ocean as Offers Pour In to Help with Restoration

Restoration of the ocean is a priority for Mozambique’s Ministry of the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries. Parallel to this thinking are efforts by international peacekeepers to create conditions conducive for a safe return to normal life for the citizens of Cabo Delgado. There is also an abundance of offers of help from other sources.

In April, Universidade Lúrio (UniLúrio) and TotalEnergies EP Mozambique Área 1 Limitada, as operator of the Mozambique LNG project, signed a memorandum of understanding to implement a project to restore coral reefs and develop sustainable fishing in Cabo Delgado province.

The three-year, USD450 000 project, covers the locations of Pemba, Maringanha, Wimbe and Gimpia. It aims to restore coral reefs, improve the health of ecosystems, set up nurseries and coral spiders, build artificial reefs, and promote sustainable fishing techniques and ecological tourism.
