Food safety is once again highlighted by a recall of some tinned fish products.
In this case the voluntary recall by Shoprite and Checkers is related to do with the 170g can of Cape Point Light Meat Shredded Tuna in Water.
According to the organisation, the recall is deemed as precautionary and the reason given is that the cans possibly have defective double seams.
“To date, we have not received any complaints and this action is being taken out of an abundance of caution,” Shoprite and Checkers say.
“We are working closely with, and will continue to cooperate with, the National Consumer Commission on this voluntary recall.” The National Consumer Commission has not publicised a warning on its website.
Products affected
The voluntary recall is limited to products with the following production code: EEJCK BPHGS01. (The production date is 23/07/2021 and best before date is 23/07/2024.)
Cape Point Light Meat Shredded Tuna in Water products in 170g cans with different product codes from the one listed here are not affected by this recall, and neither are any other Cape Point products.
The production code is on the bottom of the can.
Consumers who may have purchased the product are informed they should return it to their nearest Shoprite or Checkers store for a full refund.
The previous canned fish recall was in February 2020 when various pilchard brands were removed from the shelves. Read Food Safety. Tinned Pilchard Brands Recalled
