Funding Boost for Sustainable Fishing and Conservation Projects

Bird scaring lines (or tori lines as they are referred to), have been used by fishing vessels to monitor seabird bycatch. But now electronic monitoring devices are also being used.

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is making available almost a million US Dollars for projects that include satellite tagging stingrays, translocating sea urchins and developing deep-sea cameras.

It has identified 22 projects and fisheries that will be benefiting from its Ocean Stewardship Fund. None of the projects this year are in sub-Saharan Africa.
