Algoa Bay is once again the news as the public, conservation groups, and the city of Gqeberha’s (Port Elizabeth) tourism authority, stand together to oppose new entrants conducting ship-to-ship (STS) transfers and bunkering operations outside of the port.
The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) said at the end of January it was lifting the moratorium on more bunkering licenses being issued in Algoa Bay and that this would be effective from today, 1 April. This moratorium has now been extended until a Risk Assessment Study has been completed.
