In 2019 Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) completed its rehabilitation of the infrastructure of Port Nolloth. The port was founded in the late 1800s as an export facility for copper from mines located in the Springbok and O’Okiep area. The Aukotowa small-scale fisheries cooperative of Port Nolloth is working hard to make money but there are several challenges that its members are forced to face. These include that they don’t have enough boat permits which restricts some members from fishing, that the basket of species is under utilised although they are catching snoek and lobster, and that marketers are delaying payments. Climate change is also impacting fishing activity. But there are also some new threats on the horizon.
