Paul Landers is emotional and is likely to remain so for a very long time about what happened to him that night in May 2005 when his hake trawler turned turtle and sank after colliding with the fruit juice tanker, Ouro do Brasil. Fourteen lives were lost and the tragedy continues to be recounted in the marine court of enquiry.

The skipper of the Lindsay for eight years now believes there is a God. He says he was “helped” out of the vessel when it capsized and sank beneath the waves and it has given him a different perspective of life. Whereas before he pegged his lifespan to 50, he now lives day by day; he recently found out he is to be a father for the first time; and he is getting married as this journal goes to print. He is however hesitant to express his joy at how his life has changed in less than a year and describes the changes as “bittersweet”.
