Although currently most dam levels countrywide except for the Eastern Cape are pleasingly high at well above 80% capacity, the state of South Africa’s dams and rivers continues to be a concern. The good news though is that at a national level there appears to be greater interest and support for an independent water regulator by 2022/23.
The most recent reminder of what can happen, is the chemical spill that polluted the uMhlanga river, estuary and ocean resulting in, among other things, the widespread destruction of marine life and ecology, and the closure of beaches in KwaZulu Natal.
