Ordinary law-abiding South African citizens witness to the devastating events of the past week playing out in Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal, have been left with mixed emotions. Disbelief, shock, horror, rage, relief, and exhaustion – nothing was spared, not even our precious marine environment. Taken to the brink of despair, all we can do as a nation is to try to bounce back, and then move forward and hope to trust that what the government says it is going to do, will happen.

A consequence of the riots is an environmental disaster in the making. This is in the form of a chemical spill into the Umhlanga Lagoon which turned the water turquoise blue.
