There have been tremendous improvements in technology, navigational equipment, motor reliability and excellent safety paraphernalia, both internationally and locally over the past years but many maritime accidents still result in loss of life. Although this article was originally written for the print version of Fishing Industry News Southern Africa in 2015, the content is still relevant. Especially as a recent marine notice advises that the South African Maritime Safety Authority is reviewing the conditions of use around Regulation 37 (≤15HP) water craft.
