In August 2019 Angola’s formally ratified a Multilateral Search and Rescue Agreement with South Africa. This brought into fruition a 12 years old effort to establish formal cooperation on sea search and rescue operations in Southern Africa among six countries considered vital to the success of the operations in the sub region.
Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) is the main tool that allows officials to assess threats to security, safety, the economy or the environment across the territories they guard. Which is why South Africa needs a more strategic and coordinated approach to ensure optimal surveillance of the waters off its coast, including shipping movements within the country’s exclusive economic zone.
