Two related Australian mining companies didn’t like the message three environmental lawyers and three activists were putting out, so they took them to court on charges of defamation and damages. These are the same mining companies attempting to encroach on small-scale fishing communities up the west coast of South Africa.
Australian mining company, Mineral Commodities Ltd (MRC), has two local subsidiary companies Tormin Mineral Sands Project and the Xolobeni Mineral Sands Project. Yesterday the companies and their directors lost their defamation lawsuits against six environmental activists in the Cape High Court.
No doubt they were surprised at the outcome, such is the arrogance of many international organisations who have used bullying tactics which have resulted in similar experiences of the South African judiciary in recent years.
