Trout production in 2019 was 1550 tons and worth about R190 million. This includes the export of trout eggs (ova) to the northern hemisphere, and trout sold for angling tourism, which is an important part of some rural economies. Trout is green listed as a sustainable product.
When two trout species appeared on South Africa’s NEMBA Alien and Invasive Species (AIS) List, there was alarm in the trout industry and amongst its allies. Usually this means eradicating or controlling the species. In this case there are contradictions and there has also been a breakdown in trust which has forced the industry to take legal action.
