The 1930s saw the acquisition of factory whaling ships to sail to the Antarctic. This photo is of whalers wintering in Cape Town in 1938. The whaling industry, despite its bloody connotations, contributed significantly to the economy of the Cape, and is recorded in historical photographs of the port. Photo: Brian Ingpen

The whaling grounds off Antarctica were so rich they drew fleets from many nations. But it wasn’t only whales that were hunted. Fur seals were killed for their fur which was used to make clothing and elephant seals were hunted for their blubber which was converted into oil.
