The relationship between small-scale fishers and some marketers on South Africa’s Cape west coast is deteriorating fast. Greed, mischievous shenanigans, and extortion seem to be the order of the day. This at the expense of small-scale fishers who often are forced to consider poaching to fight their way out of poverty.

In September, fishers in Saldanha Bay opened a case of theft with the local police after a marketer allegedly took their permit and exported 1850kg of west coast rock lobster without their permission. This, it seems, is not the first time this has happened.
