Farming of freshwater crayfish is not new to South Africa. In fact, it has been done for decades even though the hairy marron species (Cherax Tenuimanus) is classified as a Category 2 Alien and Invasive Species in the AIS List (Government Notice R 864 of 29 July 2016).
The Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, Ms Barbara Creecy, recently put out a notice that she was extending the start date of the Alien and Invasive Species Lists, 2020, and the Alien and Invasive Species Regulations, 2020, to 1 March 2020.
There was no explanation offered for the delay.
