The Pros & Cons of Farming Freshwater Crayfish

Farming of freshwater crayfish is not new to South Africa.  In fact, it has been done for decades even though the hairy marron species (Cherax Tenuimanus) is classified as a Category 2 Alien and Invasive Species in the AIS List (Government Notice R 864 of 29 July 2016).

The Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, Ms Barbara Creecy, recently put out a notice that she was extending the start date of the Alien and Invasive Species Lists, 2020, and the Alien and Invasive Species Regulations, 2020, to 1 March 2020.

There was no explanation offered for the delay.
