The Republic of Maldives has a major pole & line skipjack tuna fishery. Significant quantities of yellowfin tuna are also caught. The fishery was last certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) in 2017. Following its transfer to SAI Global in February 2020, it was decided another audit was necessary to confirm its certification. This fishery is important to South Africa. It secures supply of certified sustainable tuna that is increasingly being sought by retailers and consumers around the world.
