Mozambique Security Threats Impact Fishing

Mozambique’s fishing industry has taken strain this year. Not only has the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted fish exports, but ongoing terrorism activity in the north of the country has forced thousands of fishermen to lay up their boats.

Mozambique’s politics are complicated. In August 2019, a third peace agreement was signed by President Filipe Nyusi and the Renamo leader Osufo Momade. The agreement’s focus is on the demobilisation, disarmament, and reintegration of more than 5000 Renamo soldiers.

Although very slow progress has been made, the government is limited by what it can do politically and financially. It faces stringent budget constraints, one of them the economic and fiscal fall out of the USD 2.2 billion secret debt contracts in 2013 to finance dubious fisheries and maritime security projects.
