There has been a positive response to an appeal for clarification of small-scale fisher rights in terms of the National Disaster regulations.
Masifundise Development Trust approached the Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, Ms Barbara Creecy, to find out exactly where small-scale fishers stand, particularly those that are based inland.
She confirmed small-scale fishers are allowed to continue fishing because they are classified as an essential service.
They are food producers and they are therefore protected during the national lockdown.
