The recent sinking of the Resplendent trawler in Namibia highlights the need to improve safety at sea for fishers. So it is good news that more countries have signed up to the IMO’s Cape Town Agreement on fishing vessel safety.

The entry into force of IMO’s Cape Town Agreement on fishing vessel safety is crucial for improved safety at sea for fishers. It also supports the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

A European Union high-level ministerial maritime conference took place in Opatija, Croatia, recently. Here participants, including IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim, highlighted the urgent need to bring the Cape Town Agreement into force.

During the event, three more States (Bulgaria, Poland and Portugal) signing the “Torremolinos Declaration”. Finland acceded to the Cape Town Agreement in February.
