Establishing a new fishery takes years of research and effort that might amount to nothing commercially. This is what scientists investigating the feasibility of a new scallop fishery have found out.

A popular seafood choice in Europe, the scallop has been looked at in South Africa as a viable species for aquaculture because of its market value. The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment has had scallop research on its agenda for the past 15 years. However, as has been discovered, there are complications to growing it commercially.
