ICCAT. Focus on Bigeye Tuna and Measures for Sharks

New management measures have been agreed for tropical tunas including the overfished bigeye, and species of sharks and rays. This is the outcome of a recent ICCAT meeting held in Palma de Mallorca, Spain late last month.

A greater focus on bringing about meaningful change has also resulted in an amendment to the text of the International Convention for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas which has been in development for the past six years. The amendment gives ICCAT the mandate to manage oceanic, pelagic and highly migratory species of sharks and rays.
