If you have ever taken a trip to Hout Bay harbour in Cape Town and walked down the jetty, you will know that you cannot help but read the names of trawlers moored there. Whether it was Ruwekus, Ankoveld, Stormkop, Oceana Concorde, Silver Katonkel, Plettenberg, Steenbrasdam or any other, these names have all been part of a proud yet forgotten heritage in the South African fishing industry.
Fishermen and factory staff don’t know how the trawlers’ names originated. There is no record.
