Afro Fishing Expansion. Socio-Economic Positives Outweigh Negatives

The Mossel Bay community is vociferous in its quest to retain at least some of the charm of the old village. They have a history of objecting to fishing-related projects. The latest being the proposed expansion of the Afro Fishing site in the harbour to include a fish meal and oil reduction facility.

Last year the Southern Cape Fishmeal factory in Mossindustria was also instructed to close. This after the Garden Route District Municipality chose to uphold the Constitutional right of the community to clean air when it refused to renew its Atmospheric Emission Licence (AEL).

The Mossel Bay Municipality supported the decision saying that it was ‘deemed to have a negative impact on investment and economic growth in Mossindustria and the greater Mossel Bay area.’ The factory also did not comply with the Mossel Bay By-Law on discharge of industrial effluent.
