Will the new South African Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries delay FRAP 2020? She needs to make this decision as soon as possible. A delay will affect commercial decisions to be taken by industry in the short and medium term, says legal fishing specialist, Peter Edwards.
At a recent fisheries stakeholder forum meeting held on 19 June 2019, incoming Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, Minister Barbara Creecy stated: “So, it seems to me from listening to you, that FRAP 2020 is a problem. Am I right? And when I was listening to you, a question that was going through my mind – and I’m just asking you for your advice here – is should I press the pause button on FRAP 2020? [loud applause] Remember, you’re just giving me advice, I’m just asking.”
