A major crossroads in the South African fishing industry is upon us. The 2020 fishing rights allocation process (FRAP 2020) had its official launch at a seminar hosted by the Department of Agriculture Forestry & Fisheries (DAFF) at a venue in Somerset West on 23 and 24 April 2019. The significance of this seminar was highlighted by the fact that the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Senzeni Zokwana, not only made welcoming comments but was in attendance for the duration of a large part of the seminar (at least for most of the first day).
The importance of the long term rights in all the major commercial fishing sectors is further elevated by the culmination of the parallel process of the small-scale sector.
