Restaurant patrons most often are not aware of the effort it takes to produce the food they are eating. And in the case of mussels it is not necessarily taken into consideration that they are even locally-grown or picked.

One company that is making a difference is Imbaza Mussels in Saldanha Bay. This rural development aquaculture farming company claims to have exceeded its own expectations in the farming of mussels, achieving 921 tons in 2018, and is proud that it has been able to create jobs and put food on tables.

The mussels are for the South African market in an effort to deter imports.
