A court bid to force a reduction in the total allowable catch of west coast rock lobster has proven successful for the independent conservation agency, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) South Africa. This week it heard that the judge in the Cape High Court agrees the 2017/18 total allowable catch determination of 1924.08 tons was unlawful.
WWF SA says legal action was a last resort to repeated efforts over many years to engage with the South African Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to find an amicable solution to the problems in the fishery.
