A handful of people appointed to the Fishing Transformation Council could seal the fate of the South African fishing industry, for better or for worse.
That’s the view of South African Deep-Sea Trawling Industry Association secretary Johann Augustyn, who says the government-appointed council, likely to consist of between three and five members, will be crucial to the future success – or failure – of the deep sea industry.
Council members will be appointed by Fisheries Minister Senzeni Zokwana and tasked with recommending transformation criteria to inform fishing policy and management. Their recommendations will determine key transformation indicators.
